A Unique House Warming Gift
A unique house warming gift is the perfect way to celebrate moving to a new home. A group of friends wanted to gift a truly special piece of art for some dear friends. The text was the point of departure. Mon Paradis (My Paradise) evoked the importance of home with a French flair.
Enamel and Paint
The client wanted to include the recipient’s family name and escutcheon in the design. The design is fairly complex. On one half of the shield is an angel holding a sword while on the other half, a hand reaches out from a cloud holding a laurel wreath. I used enamels to achieve the areas of color and added the detail with black paint. By firing the piece in my kiln, the details are permanent.
Putting the Pieces Together
I created the escutcheon and the lettering with fused glass. The additional depth lends a sense of weight to these elements. I wanted to keep the focus on the text and the escutcheon but have the design express a French sensibility. The wrought iron work that one often sees on the balconies in southern France inspired the flow of the background. I used gold-backed pieces to dictate the flow of the tesserae. These also added some visual richness to the piece.
Home Sweet Home
Once I had grouted and framed the piece, I packed and shipped it to its new home in Palm Beach, Florida. The recipients were very pleased with their new piece of art that was created just for them and their new home. It now hangs in the kitchen where they spend much of their time with family and friends. Each time they see this piece, they will remember the warm friendship that led to its creation.
