Fused Glass Serving Platter – Starburst
The client, who had seen some of my smaller pieces, commissioned the Starburst fused glass serving platter as a display piece for her table. It is an ample 18″ x 18″ with rounded corners and a gentle one inch lift around the edges. The platter is the perfect size for holding fruit, flowers, or seasonal decorations and really draws your eye to the table.
Creating the Design
As we worked on the design for the platter, the client wanted the look to be organic with a feeling of energy radiating out from the center of the platter like a starburst. The inspiration came from a photograph the client had taken of the inside of a tulip flower. It made me think of some of Georgia O’Keefe’s work. The close focus gave the image an abstract look. The vibrant colors create distinctive contrasts between light and dark, cool and warm.
Hand Raked Glass Creates A Unique Color Pattern
I mad the platter using various combinations of hand raked glass. Raking allows me to combine colors in unique configurations. I layered the individual pieces of colored glass on a base of iridescent clear glass with the final color flow in mind. I heated the glass to 1700 degrees in my kiln and then raked across the surface. This creates swirling patterns of color giving the glass a very organic flow. Once the glass cooled, I cut the glass to fit the design and re-fired the raked glass atop a piece of clear glass the size of the finished platter. After cold-working the final piece of glass I used a hand crafted mold to give the platter it’s final shape. This unique fused glass serving platter was a big hit with the client.
